Sorry this may seem like a silly question.
I have just been made redundant for the second time in 1 year.
Yes i have had to have time off due to illness and have always been upfront with having RA.
When i was looking for work last time i discovered that it was impossible to get a job and never even got asked for an interview - even though my qualifications were good.
It did however notice that a lot of the jobs you could at least get an interview if you were disabled.
I don't want the money i just want a chance to get to some of the interviews and wondered how i went about getting registered disabled and getting on with my life as i'm under 50 but feel on the scrapheap due to my RA
Any thoughts please

Hi there

It must be an awful situation to be in, I'm lucky in that I've never been without a job so can't begin to understand how horrible it it. One thing I do remember from job hunting though is that a lot of the application forms ask if you consider yourself to have a disability. So you don't necessarily have to be 'officially' disabled I don't think, just tick the box to say you consider you are. From what I gather it guarantees you an interview as long as you meet their minimum criteria.

Good luck!

Hi Gemma ,

Here are a couple of Direct Gov pages that may help you,
First a page that describes what questions an prospective employer can actually ask you prior to a job offer , and after ..
Allowed Recruitment Questions

and also ...

Disability Symbol

Any company or organisation who uses the "Positive about Disability" symbol has to give an interview to any applicant who meets the minimum requirements ....etc etc

Also have a quick look around the links on those pages:)

There are so many " versions " of what a disability is , even between Tax Credits, Other Benefits and Local Authority needs assessments. It is also subjective , but personally i believe that if you have a health condition that puts you at a disadvantage in any aspect of life , especially work , then the balance needs to be redressed.

However one thing i would say is that if you access benefits this opens up other streams of help from the Job Centre .
Might be worth trying to get an appointment with a Disability Employment Adviser at a Job Centre to discuss this.

Hope this helps

hi

I am registered disabled- my occupational therapist at the council did it for me.
I have a little card in my purse as proof.

Hi Phil

I too am registered disabled and Social Services provided me with a letter. It is many years since I was registered, 1989, I think, soon after diagnosis. Since then I have been medically retired by the Civil service, at the age of 33, due to long term sick leave with RA and have not worked since, other than in a voluntary capacity.

Due to the unreliable nature of RA I doubt I will ever work again! Such is life RollEyes

I would simply give your local council a ring- speak to adult services and ask to be registered.

here is a link about it locally here- your council might have something on their website too.

This is interesting. I've just seen if we have anything like this in our area, but nothing like this is listed.

Think I'll try and look into this more.
